Onto Soft Grounds

How can textile processes help us understand and discuss our sense of comfort and belonging?

Onto Soft Grounds is a collaborative project between Livia and Chloé Rochefort exploring how textile processes can help us understand and discuss our sense of comfort and belonging. What is home to you? What imagery, textures or colours give you a sense of safety and comfort?

This was a community project led by a series of free textile workshops in collaboration with the Well Space Centre in Homerton. These workshops were available twice a week for a month, and gave people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds an opportunity to discover a new skill, meet people, and reflect on their mental wellbeing through the act of stitching.

By the end of the workshops, Livia and Chloe created a multi-sensory textile quilt incorporating all of the artworks created by the participants. They created an immersive installation with the quilt at the Well space centre which aimed to bring a sense of comfort, softness and play to visitors. The exhibition was a curated show of over 25 participant’s work .
